Ladies rowers clinch Higgins Trophy

ROWING: Ladies rowers rowed with great endurance, strength and balance to win the overall title to carry away the Maris Musaeus Higgins Trophy collecting 34 points to Musaeus College 6 points at the Ladies vs Musaeus 4th annual Regatta held on the Beira Waters yesterday. The Regatta was sponsored by Dialog GSM.

For Ladies College it was their second win in the 2-1 with the 2006 regatta ending in a tie 20 points each. The Champion Ladies College oarswomen won the 'B' pair, 'A' pair, 'B' four and the Boat Race. They also won the 'C' four (but as points were awarded).

Musaeus started winning the first two events 'A' Scull and 'B' Scull to collect 6 points and at the interval Ladies College no the 'B' pair to equal with 6 points each.

Ladies College rowers proves their class to win the remaining four events.

In the main race of the day the Boat Race saw Ladies College squad Amayi Mandawala (Bow), Denise Koch (2), Varunika Samarasinghe (3), Amenthi Weerasinghe (stroke) and Minuri Amarasuriya (cox) rowing with great power and courage to beat the Musaeus squad Swarnamali Weerasinghe (B), Vinuri Jayasundara (2), Sachithra Jayathilaka (3), Naduni Perera (S) and Sanjeevani Kularatne (cox) with comfortable ease 'clocking' 4.07 secs. Musaeus times 4.21 secs.

'C' Four: Nanditha De Silva (Bow, Dulanjali Mandawela (2) Sarani Jayawardena (3), Amaya Jayasuriya (stroke) Khyati Wikramanayake (cox) of Ladies beat Dilhara Rupasinghe (Bow), Natasha Perera (2), Rashmi Kodikara (3) Poornima Mananayake (stroke) Natheera Wijemanne (cox) of Musaeus (Time: 5:06) - No points awarded.

'B' Pair: Senuri de Silva (B), Yanithtra Hallock (s) of Ladies best Swarnamali Wijesinghe (b), Naduni Perera (s) of Musaeus (Time: 4:27 secs).

'A' Pair: Sarani Jayawardena (B), Amaya Jayasuriya (S) of Ladies beat Sachitra Jayathilaka (B) Vinuri Jayasundara (S) of Musaeus (Time 4:22secs).

'B Four: Oshani Kulatunga (B), Tarea Navaratne (2) Senuri de Silva (3) Yanithtra Havelock (stroke) Chrutti Pieres (cox) of Ladies beat Chalani Ramanayake (B) Samanmali Gurusinghe (2) Rushani Pathirana (3) Ranmalee Jayaratne (S) Dhanishri Welikala (cox) of Musaeus (Time 4:21 secs)
