Diecast, die-cast or die cast?
by Aditha Dissanayake
Whether you spell it diecast, die-cast or die cast... whether you
like a scale of 1:18, 1:24 or 1:43, if you wish to give way to your love
of cars, motorcycles, trucks and history you will find yourself in the
right place at the Mount Lavinia Hotel when the Miniature Model Club of
Sri Lanka (MMCSL) opens its doors to the public.
Talking about the MMC of Sri Lanka, immediate past president, Milinda
Hettiarachchi, says they are continuing a tradition which can be traced
back to the days of the British Raj and the years that followed the
declaration of Independence.
"When I was growing up a Dinky Super cost between Rs. 5 to Rs. 7
while a Matchbox cost Rs. 1.50. Similing at the expression of wonder on
my face he hastens to add "But our pocket money was fifty cents at the
time.".... Calling it a fascinating hobby Hettiarachchi a hotelier by
profession says he got interested in collecting miniature model cars
when he saw exhibitions and auctions of miniature models in his travels
abroad.
Collecting miniatures can be a fun hobby. They are nice to display in
the house, either in the living room or study or even at the office.
They can be great ice-breakers or conversation starters.
Especially the ones which pay great attention to little details. But
according to Hettiarachchi, the value of a miniature model depends on
the box it is contained in. "Collectors should always preserve the boxes
they buy the models in." advices Hettiarachchi.
Saying that some of the members of the club are students he adds that
here is a good hobby that can strengthen the bond between two
generations.
