Ex-Sri Lanka Judo Champion Lt. Col Nanayakkara dies

JUDO - Former President of the Sri Lanka Judo Association Lt. Colonal Gamini Nanayakkara died yesterday after a brief illness.

Nanayakkara was the Civil Administrative Officer of the Sri Lanka Army in Vavuniya. A top class judoka he was a fifth Dan Black Belt. He was national judo champion for two successive years and won the first Gold Medal for Sri Lanka in an international tournament. He was Sri Lanka's national coach in judo in 1984 and President of the Sri Lanka Judo Association from 1996 to 2001.

His funeral will take place at the General Cemetery, Borella on October 15 (Monday) at 5 p.m. with the cortŠge leaving his residence, No 538, Asiri Uyana, Dodamgahahena, Gothatuwa, New Town.
