Chatura Weerasinghe new Sri Lanka soccer captain
SOCCER: Chatura Maduranghe Weerasinghe has been appointed as the
captain of the Sri Lanka National Football Team. He succeeds Dudley
Steinwall who captained the national team for 5 years. 26-year-old
Weerasinghe is an experienced midfielder and has been playing for the
national team since 1998.
His first appearance for the country was in the Bristol Freedom Cup
Championship in 1998 where he scored a goal against India in the final
in Colombo. He is a product of De Mazenod College, Kandana and is the
only schoolboy footballer to receive Sri Lanka Schools colours for 4
consecutive years.
He represents Ratnams Sports Club in local football tournaments and
plays as a professional football player for Valencia SC in Maldives. He
was the highest goal scorer this season in Male, scoring 11 goals for
his club.
He played for Saunders SC for 9 years before joining Ratnams in 2005.
He captained the Sri Lanka schools team, Sri Lanka Youth team and Sri
Lanka under 23 team for SAG and Pre Olympic tournaments. He had scored
20 international goals against countries and 19 international goals for
clubs Valencia - Male and 150 goals in local club tournaments.
