Police raids to check crime during New Year

Police will carry out raids on illicit liquor booths and gambling dens to prevent violent crimes being committed by those under the influence of liquor on account of the forthcoming Sinhala and the Tamil New Year, Police Media Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana told the Sunday Observer.

Army Chief Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya, who returned to the country on Friday after a six-day visit to Pakistan, said military ties between the two countries have strengthened further and he was able to discuss various issues relating to the military with his Pakistani counterpart, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

Traffic laws alone can't prevent fatal accidents - SP Ajith Rohana

Colombo is one of the safest cities in Asia. Fatal accidents in Colombo city are very rare, according to Police Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana. But the number of road accidents in the country as a whole has increased at an alarming rate, with 5 - 7 deaths being reported a day due to vehicle collisions. This is a serious issue; the statistics warn of an impending danger.
