Beware of expired food during festive season

The Chief Medical Officer of the Colombo Municipal Council Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam has told people gathering in the Colombo city during the festive season to be more vigilant about the food they consume as expired food items are on sale during the season.

He said that the Public Health Department of the CMC will carry out inspections in food outlets at the Pettah bus stand and Fort railway station as huge crowds at these places purchase food items from nearby food outlets.

“We will inspect all these food outlets from tomorrow to check the food hygienic levels and the cleanliness of these food outlets”, Dr. Kariyawasam said.“People should also be vigilant about food items such as sweet meats, biscuits and cakes purchased at these food outlets as there are expired items in those outlets. We have come across many expired food items in these food outlets during our raids”, Dr. Kariyawasam said. RW
