Minister calls on students to improve knowledge of int'l affairs

The expanding of the knowledge of international affairs by schoolchildren irrespective of age limits was highlighted by Education Minister Bandula Gunawardane at a school event last week.According to Minister Gunawardane, children in this globalised world should be aware of handling computers and the use of the Internet.

He also stressed the importance of students learning English as computers and the internet cannot be used properly without a sound knowledge of English. Minister Gunawardane was addressing an event at Welagedara, Kurunegala recently.

The Minister said schoolchildren are fortunate to have computer facilities in their schools as the Government has provided computers not only for urban schools, but also for rural schools.

"Our objective is to improve the knowledge of schoolchildren on computer literacy and the newly launched `Web Patasala' information technology program is a good example," he said. The Minister called upon the 4.3 million schoolchildren, especially those pursuing higher studies, to expand their computer literacy since it will benefit them in securing job opportunities after their school education.
