CPA earns Rs. 42m in fines

The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) earned Rs. 41.7 million as
fines from shopkeepers and boutique operators for violating the Consumer
Protection Act, Cooperative and Internal Trade Ministry sources said.
These raids were conducted in Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy and Kurunegala
districts between January and May, according to the Ministry.
Altogether 15,447 raids were conducted in these districts by CPA
officers, the Ministry pointed out.
Accordingly, 2,116 raids were conducted in the Colombo district,
1,272 in Gampaha, 1,731 in Kandy and 1,148 in Kurunegala, the sources
said.
They were charged on keeping essential commodities hidden, selling
commodities above the stipulated price and violating the Consumer
Protection Act, the Ministry said.
