AIPA calls upon Govt to protect poultry farmers

Small and medium scale poultry farmers should be protected to maintain sustainability of the industry. Market failures and resulting losses have discouraged small and medium scale producers, president of the All Island Poultry Association (AIPA) Dr. D.D. Wanasinghe told the Sunday Observer.

The import of milk should be stopped as the country is self-sufficient said Pelwatte Sugar Corporation and Maubima Lanka Foundation Chairman Ariyaseela Wickramanayake.He said the country spends around $ 4,000 million a year on imports of milk powder from countries that have made Sri Lanka and many developing countries a dumping ground.

The Government through the Ministry of Coconut Development and Janatha Estate Development has launched a concessional loan scheme for entrepreneurs launching industries related to coconut. Ministry Secretary Anura Siriwardena said the scheme named Kapruka Nipayum Diriya was launched to boost the industries related to coconut.
