Ladies of RCGC organise golf tourney for caddies

GOLF: It is going to be a day of caddies when the Ladies golf section of the Royal Colombo Golf Club organises a golf tournament for the caddies at the RCGC golf course in Colombo on Wednesday June 6th commencing at 1 p.m.

This tournament has been organised to honour the hard way put in by the caddies who are no doubt the treasures of golf and without the caddies there will be no golf. Their support has been wonderful and their support immeasurable and the friendship offered is beyond words could describe said the top golfer Manori Jayakoddy.

Therefore, all these will have to beappreciated and there is no way than to organise a tournament for the caddies and to keep them happy and above all their efforts have been recognised in a very big way.

In fact our caddies are skilled golfers and highly knowledgeable and some of the finest golfers this country has produced are golfers. Top golfers like Nandasena Perera, S. Thangarajah and Vijitha Bandara learnt their trade as caddies and some of them have gone on to enjoy enormous success on the International golfing scene.

Handling the arrangements at this grand and unique event are ladies from the RCGC Elizabeth Moir Tendulhar, Suwen Selvaratnam, Manori Jayakkody, Jane Kong and Christa Stubber.

According to Manori Jayakkody there will be 23 teams competing for a challenge cup. Each team will comprise a lady member golfer and four caddies. There will be a shot gun start at 1 p.m. Spiced with fire crackers at several holes to signify the tee off times. All teams will finish together around 5.30 p.m.

In addition to the Challenge Cup there will be several individual prizes offered donated by numerous sponsors and members. This will no doubt encourage the caddies to come out with top performances.

This is not all and at the end of the day the Caddy Master, Starters, Course Marshalls, 128 caddies, ball pickers, bag carriers, and range workers and all these people who go to make golf possible in the course and they will number 161 will be assembled and Cargills Food City the largest chain of Super Markets in the country will gift them with gift bags full of dry rations.

They will also be provided with gifts from HSBC Bank and garments from Court Haulds and also from Kash Garments.

Is there any other way to recognise and appreciate the great services performed by the caddies than to organise a tournament and offer them a Challenge Cup and individual prizes and also shower them with gifts.

The efforts of the Ladies Section of the Royal Colombo Golf Club must be lauded in the big way and the other golf clubs should emulate them.
