Beware, Dengue mosquitoes breed in rambuttan skins
by Ananda KANNANGARA
The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) last week called upon
rambuttan sellers and buyers to pay more care when discarding rambuttan
skins as Dengue mosquitoes could breed in them.
The NDCU has called upon rambuttan users to either break the skin
into pieces or bury them rather than throw them into open garbage heaps
as such places are the most vulnerable for Dengue mosquitoes.
According to a recent survey, conducted by Public Health Inspectors
during their anti-dengue house to house campaigns, it was revealed that
dengue mosquitoes breed larvae on rambuttan skins and on the outer skin
of banana flowers.
NDCU Entomologist Mrs Janaki Sakunthala told the Sunday Observer that
Dengue mosquitoes leave larvae on cement blocks, coconut shells, used
tyres, bottle lids and discarded curd pots.
