Mechanism strengthened to check child abuse

Parents should exhort children not to fall prey to child abuse said Women's Affairs and Child Development Minister Tissa Karalliyadde.

He said that the mechanism to check child abuse has been strengthened. The ministry has already recruited 169 graduates to the ministry for the Colombo district alone and more graduates will be recruited for the outstations.

They will be trained to discharge their duties efficiently, the minister said. Most parents are to blame for their children being abused. It's the prime duty of parents to look after their siblings who have no knowledge whatsoever about the society.

Some television programs are also harmful to children and parents should not allow them to view all such programs the minister said.

Government officials assigned to oversee children and women must implement practical programs.

They should visit households and speak to the elders in this regard, the minister said.

The minister said that stringent punishment should be meted out to child abusers. . -LSAW
