Sarath Palitha Fernando, Actg. Attorney General
The Solicitor General Sarath Palitha Fernando PC has been appointed
Acting Attorney General with immediate effect.
Acting AG Fernando, an old boy of Royal College, Colombo led both the
College English and Sinhala debating teams, also served as Student
Chairman of the College English Literary Association and a General
Secretary of the Sinhala Literary Association. He passed the Preliminary
and Final Examinations of the Sri Lanka Law College with First Class
Honours.
He was awarded the Prize for Commercial Law, for securing the
highest marks at the Final Examination and the Hector Jayawardena Gold
Medal for being first in the address to the Jury Contest in English.
Lakshmi Gunasekera, new Addl.Secretary
Ms Lakshmi Gunasekera has assumed duties as the Additional Secretary
(Legal) of the Ministry of Justice.
Lakshmi was the Secretary to the Law Commission of Sri Lanka for the
last twenty years and has been promoted as an Additional Secretary of
the Ministry of Justice with immediate effect.
A past student of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo she was a House Captain
and a senior prefect. In 1979 she took oaths as an Attorney-at-Law and
in the same year joined the Law Commission as the Assistant Secretary.
In 1972 she was promoted to the post of Secretary, Law Commission and
she was also the Head of the Department.
Somaweera Chandrasiri remembered
The 41st death anniversary of former Deputy Cultural Affairs Minister
Somaweera Chandrasiri will be held opposite Somaweera Chandrasiri
statue, Piliyandala on July 11.
Ministers T.B. Ekanayake, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Dinesh Gunawardene,
Vasudewa Nanayakkara, Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana and
Parliamentarians J.R.P. Sooriyapperuma and Vidura Wickramanayaka will
participate in the commemorative ceremony.The Somaweera Chandrasiri
Foundation has also organised a medical clinic and several other
religious programs at Viswakala Buddhist Centre, Piliyandala on July 10
to mark the event. As a people's representative of Moratuwa and Kesbewa
electorates, Somaweera Chandrasiri was elected to the first Parliament
of independent Sri Lanka. He was appointed Deputy Cultural Affairs
Minister of the 1970 Samagi Peramunu Government.
ACWBC Founder's Day
The All Ceylon Women's Buddhist Congress (ACWBC), will conduct an
all-night pirith ceremony at the Buddhist Congress premises on July 12,
to commemorate the Founder's Day.
