Another promising lot of cricketers came off in the SUNDAY OBSERVER-MOBITEL
Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2012 show at the Galadari Hotel VIP wing
on Friday.
Officials from all parts of the Country Reepresentatives from School
Cricket Associations headed by its president L.M.D. Dharmasena who is
also the Principal of Ananda College, Colombo.
This contest is no doubt the most looked forward event for schoolboy
cricketers as they get rewarded for the hard work and sacrifice made
during a gruelling school cricket season lasting for over six months.
The selection panel comprising over 13 officials from Colombo and
Outstation schools selected the winners purely on merit taking into
consideration their performances during the season. Priority is also
given to those who have represented the country at junior level.
The contest revealed that more and more cricketers from the
outstations are emerging which is a heartening sign for cricket in Sri
Lanka. The date and the venue for the grand finale will be notified
later.
The proceedings of the selection committee meeting began by observing
two minutes silence for two prominent figures who had rendered yeoman
service at the contest almost from the beginning.
The late Leslie Fernando who passed away early this year, was a
‘livewire’ in making the competition a success with his meticulous
preparations, prior to the big occasion and Ignatius Anandappa who
represented the umpires committee were sadly missed.
Anandappa died of an heart-attack and was laid to rest yesterday at
his hometown, Moratuwa. He was also to be a part of the selection panel
this year. |
