Kandy District - 515 points - Champs at Veterans Athletic Meet

ATHLETICS: Kandy District with 515 points won the All Island Veterans Athletic Meet conducted by the Kandy District Veterans Athletic Association held on July 1 and 2 at the Bogambara Grounds.

There were 635 men and women athletes who participated at the meet from 21 Districts who participated at the meet.

While Kandy District won the top place, Colombo came second with 317 points, Gampaha third with 332 points, Kegalle fourth with 196 points, Kurunegala fifth 94, Badulla sixth 66 points, Galle seventh 54, Kalutara eighth 50 points, Nuwara Eliya ninth 32 points and Trincomalee tenth with 31 points.

The chief guest at the opening ceremony was Tissa Samarasinghe - the Secretary of the Sri Lanka Veterans Athletic Association. The former Asian Games double Gold Medallist (5,000 and 10,000 metres) S.L.B. Rosa was also present on the first day. The chief guest at the awards ceremony was the Mayor of Kandy Mahen Ratwatte. The Deputy Mayor Sena Dissanayake and the Kandy Municipal Commissioner Chandana Tennekoon were also associated with the Mayor.

The happy couple from Ratnapura - Menike (left) who won the 100 and 200 metres in the 60 year age category for women with husband Chandradasa who won the 300 metres hurdles and 80 metres hurdles for men in the 70 age group category for men.
