Thirty on the mat: CID probe into 500 internet crimes

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has started probing into over 500 crimes through the internet. The Computer Unit of the CID has already explored possibilities of filing cases on 450 other cases of internet crimes. At present, five cases were being heard at the High Courts against five suspects and 30 cases were being heard at Magistrates Courts against 30 persons.

Thirty persons who were found guilty of committing internet crimes have been punished by law up to now.

"The attention of the CID is now extensively drawn towards these types of crimes and more experienced officials have been deployed to arrest the wrongdoers who misuse internet and deceive the internet users by using very sophisticated devices, said W.M. Balasooriya, Director of Education speaking at a meeting of school heads of the Kurunegala district held recently at Bingiriya MMV in Kurunegala.
