New Year Festival
Time imposes agendas on humans. Men and women
cannot escape those imperatives. They are born. They grow up. They
die. Birth, growth, ageing and death are all determined by time. Man
has but scant control - if at all - over his destinies.
Avurudu celebrations half a century ago
Hearths played an important role in the Avurudu
celebrations. Days before the New Year, women folk would prepare the
sweetmeats and as they fried, steamed, and cooked, the air would be
thick with smoke and filled with the pungent aroma of spices.
A glimpse into our colonial past
The medieval period was an embarrassing tale of
feudalism prevalent in major parts of the globe. It was trade that
emerged from the so-called barter system that was largely
responsible for the growth of urban civilisations that led to the
break up of feudalism.
