Beware of thunder : Seven victims to date

The Disaster Management Centre has confirmed that seven persons have died of thunderbolts this year (2014) to date. Two people suffered critical injuries.

During 2013, 54 persons died of thunderbolts. "Under the circumstances, the NWP Education Department has instructed all school heads in both Kurunegala and Puttalam districts to educate the school community extensively on the safety measures that students should take to avoid unfortunate natural risks during the forthcoming New Year festive season, which is normally a rainy season", said A. Dassanayake, Zonal Director of Education, Kurunegala when contacted by the "Sunday Observer".
