Police get tough against drunken drivers during Avurudu

The police will get tough with those who drive under the influence of alcohol during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

The police has launched a special operation countrywide to monitor and arrest drunken drivers. Officers of police traffic branches have been given instructions on how to arrest drunken drivers.

The two-week operation was launched on Thursday morning at 6.00 and 168 persons who drove under the influence of liquor had been taken in for questioning by 6.00 a.m. on Friday.

The police also took in for questioning 76 motorcyclists, 68 trishaw drivers and 24 motorists.

Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana has cautioned the public against driving after consuming liquor as there was a tendency for people to drink and drive during festivities.

Traffic police officers will be deployed in strategic areas in and around the city round the clock to nab offenders, the SSP said.

The suspects will be produced in court and their driving licences will be suspended for three months, he said.
