Malaria ravages LTTE-held Vanni

The Sri Lanka Red Cross medical officials based in the poverty stricken LTTE controlled Vanni region warn that a malaria epidemic had gripped the area and that an average of around one hundred cases are reported daily. Most of the patients are said to suffer from recurrent fever.

De-commissioning of illegal firearms; UN team here to assist

A five-member team from the United Nations is now in Sri Lanka to help the government as a gesture of goodwill to oversee the de-commissioning of unauthorised firearms and other weapons in the possession of civilians and members of certain political parties, said Interior Minister John Amaratunga.
