Islands, sea route, sticking points

Norwegian officials are currently engaged with the LTTE in negotiations regarding two requirements the Tigers want fulfilled prior to direct peace talks in Thailand. While the Government has broadly indicated its readiness to deproscribe the LTTE, the Tiger leadership are additionally insisting on their demand to be able to open political offices on the Jaffna islands and also their right to use the eastern sea route between the Vanni and the Eastern region.

Prime Minister leaves for India

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe left for an official visit to India yesterday. While in India he is scheduled to meet the Indian President K. R. Narayanan, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Leader of the Opposition Sonia Gandhi and will also hold talks with several senior ministers of the Central Government.

PM asks state bus services, railway not to increase fares

The Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has asked the Transport authorities not to effect a fare hike for the Sri Lanka Central Transport Board buses and the cluster bus companies as well as the Sri Lanka Railways Department. He has pointed out that the public is not in a situation to face a fare hike with the current cost of living and inflation.
