As Sri Lanka hosts the eighth international
Congress on AIDS in Asia and Pacific under the motto 'Waves of
Change' - 'Waves of Hope', it is pertinent to look at the myriad of
challenges the killer disease poses against the backdrop of
increasing vulnerability of the population, especially those who are
in the high risk category, teenagers, commercial sex-workers and
migrant workers.

A tribute to Dr. Pramod Ranatunga :
Dr. Pramod Vishwabandhu Ranatunga, the Resident
Cardiologist of the Institute of Cardiology, Colombo, is no more. He
breathed his last one year ago but still he lives with his patients,
who wish that at any given moment he would come from heaven with his
charming smile giving them hope to live on.

Harold Pieris was as solid as the pillars of
Lake House. Although big-made and bulky, Harry's strength was that
of a gentle giant. His presence was a comforting one, for, although
he worked behind the scenes, the skill he displayed in every field
of journalism and newspaper administration made him as durable as
the elegant pillars on which D.R. Wijewardene constructed his
edifice.
