Unamboowa sets six new records

SWIMMING: National swimmer Heshan Unamboowa of Trinity College gave yet another remarkable performance to win all six events setting new meet records in all events at the three day National Age Group Swimming Championship held at the Sugathadasa Stadium pool yesterday.

Yesterday he established two new marks in the boys under-16 - 100 metres back stroke with time of 1.03.40 secs and 50 metres from style 'clocking' 25.37 secs. His other records were in the 400 metres free style - 4.24.68 secs, 200 metres individual medley 2.21.65 secs, 50 metres back stroke 28.86 secs and 100 metres free style 56.05 secs. Indeed the feat of Unamboowa was praiseworthy.

Yet another swimmer from Kandy, Miniruwani Samarakoon of Gateway International School, Kandy also performed excellently winning all six events setting one new record. Her new mark was in the 200 metres butterfly stroke 2.38.00 secs. She also won the 200 individual medley 2.47.47 secs, 100 metres butterfly 1.12.33 secs. 400 metres individual medley 6.00.93 50 metres butterfly stroke 32.37 secs and 100 metres back stroke 1.18.00 secs.

K. T. Cherantha de Silva of Ananda was responsible for the third record of yesterday when he was the boys under-12, 50 metres free style returning time of 31.20 secs. Machi Raheem of Otter Aquatic Club who set two new records on Thursday and Friday equalled the girls under-12.50 metres from style event 31.48 secs.

The other record breakers of the meet Sachini Amerasinghe of Southland College in the girls under-14 - 50 metres back stroke - 39.20 secs, Mineka Karunaratne of AIS in the girls under-16 - 100 metres breast stroke 38.13 secs, Chanka Malibada of Ananda in the boys under-19 - 20 metres breast stroke 32.26 secs and 200 metres breast stroke 2.41.19 secs, M. Hulangamuwa of Trinity in the Boys under-12 - 200 metres individual medley 2.49.44 secs, Imesh Chathuranga of D. S. Senanayake College in the boys under-10 - 50 metres back stroke 39.71 secs, Machiko Raheem of Otter Club in the girls under-12 - 50 metres back stroke 36.64 secs and 100 metres from style 1.09.99 secs.
