LTTEers in Madurai prison; security strengthened

The security of the Madurai prison which houses around eighty LTTE cadres in Tamil Nadu has been intensified as part of the security measures adopted in the state to curb the LTTE activities, reports from Chennai said.

Around eighty LTTE cadres have been detained at the prison in Madurai, the city which is popularly known as the `Temple City ' of South India.

According to reports six of the eighty LTTE cadres were hardcore members wanted in connection with various unlawful activities in Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu State Government has strengthened the security measures in Tamil Nadu following the escalation of LTTE activities in the coastal areas.

The LTTE suspects have been detained in several prisons in other areas in Tamil Nadu and security of those prisons have also been intensified, reports said.

Meanwhile on May 21, in Chennai on the occasion of the sixteenth death anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanithi pledged to fight terrorism in the State.
