Antonians in 26-12 win over Royal
by Shamsser Jaleel
RUGBY: St. Anthony's College Katugastota continued their winning
streak and took a step closer to the School's League Title when they
beat Royal College Colombo by 26 Points (3 Goals, 1 Try) to 12 Points (1
Goal, 1 Try) yesterday at Nittawela. At the breather the winners led
19-12.
The Antonians completely dominated the rucks and scrums and
repeatedly punched holes in the weak Royal line, which was exposed a
number of times. The margin of victory would have been greater if not
for some unwanted kicking by stand off Roshan Wijesiri who had an off
day. Because of the aimless kicking the three quarters did not get the
much-needed good ball.
For the visitors it was their number 8 Bilal Hassan who had an
outstanding game both in attack as well as in defence. He pulled off
some fine cover tackles in defence and prevented the Antonians from
scoring freely.
Antonians drew first blood through a fine try by skipper Kusal
Rankothge who is enjoying the best season of his school career. Roshan
Wijesiri added the extra points to take a 7-1 lead. Seven minutes later
Royal cut the deficit through a fine number 8 try by Bilal Hassen. The
kick was not on target. Within the next five minutes both sides missed a
penalty each. Roshan Wijesiri missed for the Antonians and Duminda
Attygalle for Royal.
In the 20th minute of the game Antonian number 8 Shashika Jayawardena
powered his way for a superb try. Kick at goal was missed by Mohamed
Riyal. (SACK 12, Royal 5) Two minutes later Antonian Centre Amila
Weligampola intercepted Royal pass and scored a fine try. Roshan
Wijesiri added the extra points. (SACK 19, Royal 15).
On the Stroke of half time Royal number 8 Bilal Hassen touched down
to score his second try of the game. Winger Duminda Attygalla added the
extra points and "Lemons" were taken at 19-12 favour St. Anthony's.
The second half was a dull affair with aimless kicking by both sides
and frayed tempers. The only scoring was done by St. Anthony's flanker
Mohamed Irfan. Mohamed Riyal added the extra points to give a 26-12 win. |
