SSC Masters Sports Festival in June
SPORTS FESTIVAL: For the first time in Sri Lanka a Masters event
featuring 18 of the most popular sports in Sri Lanka will be worked off
from 15th June to 23rd June.
This large and much needed event is organised by the Sinhalese Sports
Club and is the brain child of non other than sporting veteran Susil
Ramanayake and Chairman of organising committee Michael De Zoyza.
The event is made possible thanks to the generous sponsorships
received from Dialog, People's Bank, Sirasa, Ole Marketing, Sumathi
Group and Speed Water.
The main venue will be SSC where Cricket, Archery, Badminton, Squash,
Netball, Snooker, Swimming, Tug of War, Water Polo & Dance Sport will be
conducted, while Athletics will be at University grounds, Rugby &
Basketball at Royal Sports Complex, Football at Campbell Park, Table
Tennis at Race course and Carrom at Carrom Federation.
The event will commence on 15th June with the grand closing ceremony
on the 23rd June. The Dance Sport will be the finale to the weeks events
and around 200 are expected to participate from around the country.
As this is the first time such an event will take place, the
organisers hope it will attract all great sporting legends of yesterday
as participation in most sports will be for age groups of over 35 and
above. The team sports have already received over 15 to 20 entries and
the individual sports such as Athletics, Swimming and Tennis etc., have
over 300 participants in each sport.
The SSC has appointed Delair Events to coordinate the entire event
while the organising committee of SSC is headed by Michael De Zoysa and
Susil Ramanayake steering this project.
All participants are expected to have a great time bringing out some
veteran talent and creating an All Island sporting camaraderie and
unity. The country needs such an event to boost the unity among all
communities.
This is also expected to be the beginning of an annual event which
should grow from a national event to an International event first
attracting other participants from the Asian Region and then
International Regions.
Entrance to watch the event is free of charge except on the last day
and closing ceremony where tickets will be sold.
