Dissanayake family-tennis champions
TENNIS: The Dissanayake family - Anura, Mala, Dilenthi and Dilantha
carried away the bulk of the awards at the tennis tournament conducted
by the Kandy District Sports Development Foundation at the Kandy Garden
Club and Kandy Police tennis courts.
It was the inaugural tennis tournament conducted by the foundation
and what a memorable occasion it turned out to be for the Dissanayake
family.
Dilenthi, a 16-year-old student of Mahamaya Girls College, had a hand
in four awards - champion in the under 17, 19 and women's singles and
women's doubles events. Dilenthi was unbeaten in the tournament.
Eleven year-old Dilantha - the captain of the junior tennis team of
Trinity College, was the champion in under 11 boys singles and doubles,
under 13 boys doubles and runner-up in under 13 boys singles.
The father of the clan Anura, was the champion in veteran doubles and
runner-up in men's open events. The mother - Mala, teamed up with
daughter Dilenthi to win the women's doubles.
The successful completion of this inaugural tournament had prompted
the tournament committee headed by DIG Central Province Nimal Mediwake
to make it an annual event in the future.
At the tourney there was the Chief Minister, Central Provincial
Council Sarath Ekanayake, the President of Kandy District Sports
Development Foundation Col. Anuruddha Ratwatte too were present.
