Dissanayake family-tennis champions

TENNIS: The Dissanayake family - Anura, Mala, Dilenthi and Dilantha carried away the bulk of the awards at the tennis tournament conducted by the Kandy District Sports Development Foundation at the Kandy Garden Club and Kandy Police tennis courts.

It was the inaugural tennis tournament conducted by the foundation and what a memorable occasion it turned out to be for the Dissanayake family.

Dilenthi, a 16-year-old student of Mahamaya Girls College, had a hand in four awards - champion in the under 17, 19 and women's singles and women's doubles events. Dilenthi was unbeaten in the tournament.

Eleven year-old Dilantha - the captain of the junior tennis team of Trinity College, was the champion in under 11 boys singles and doubles, under 13 boys doubles and runner-up in under 13 boys singles.

The father of the clan Anura, was the champion in veteran doubles and runner-up in men's open events. The mother - Mala, teamed up with daughter Dilenthi to win the women's doubles.

The successful completion of this inaugural tournament had prompted the tournament committee headed by DIG Central Province Nimal Mediwake to make it an annual event in the future.

At the tourney there was the Chief Minister, Central Provincial Council Sarath Ekanayake, the President of Kandy District Sports Development Foundation Col. Anuruddha Ratwatte too were present.
