Two new records at School Games

ATHLETICS: Sonali Kumari Weerasekera of Sevamukthakandawura Maha Vidyalaya established a new meet record in the Girls under-21 Putt Shot, while Shayini Mahaliyana of St. Bridgets Convent added the other new record on the penultimate day of the four day All-Island School Games Athletic Championships conducted by the Ministry of Education and held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

Sonali erased off a 12 year old record in the girls under-21 putt shot to a distance of 12.05 metres. L. R. Siribaddena of Nadugala MV, Matara held the previous mark of 11.02 secs in 1995.

Shayini was responsible for the second record in the 100 metres hurdles (girls under-17). She 'clocked' 15.29 secs to break the mark of Champika Ranaweera of Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo - (15.87 secs in 2005)

With yesterday's two records the tally of new records rose to seven. The standings for the overall championships saw A. Rathnayaka MMV Manikhinna of were in the lead in both the boys and girls. In the boys A. Rathnayake MMV first with 60 points followed with St. Benedict's College second 59 and St. Joseph's College third 52.

In the girls A. Rathnayake MMV was leading with 97 points, St. Joseph's Balika Vidyalaya second 53 and Ferguson Girls High School third 37.

The meet will be continued today commencing at 7 am with half marathon for both boys and girls followed with 28 more events to be worked off.
