RUGBY: A mid second half blitz by St.Peter's helped them to maintain
their unbeaten record as the league and knock-out Milo schools rugby
champs for the third consecutive year when they beat Isipathana by 23
points (2 goals and 3 penalties) to 13 (1 goal and two penalties) in the
President's Trophy Schools Rugby final played at the Royal College
Sports Complex yesterday.
With the scores level at 3-3 at the breather, the Peterites after a
hard fought first half to keep their opponents under control, suddenly
found their fluency and crossed the Pathana line twice rapidly. Fly half
Irfath Meedin scored off a line out and immediately skipper Ranuka
Jayasinghe broke off and scored. The conversions and the penalties were
put over by Harshan Weerakkody.
For Isipathana Centre Damith Udayanga scored under the post off an
interception and Mubarak gave them the extra points and also put over
the penalties.
Aruna Jayasekera refereed.
St.John's Nugegoda beat St.Thomas' Matara to bag the Chairman's
Trophy while Nalanda beat Piliyandala Central to win the Prime Ministers
Trophy.
