Cyber crimes, a colossal loss to business
Business establishments and social organisations
are facing colossal losses from cyber crimes which are on the rise
due to poor mechanisms to combat it, Sri Lanka Computer Emergency
Readiness Team Cordination Centre (Sri Lanka CERT CC), Chief
Executive Officer Lal Dias told a seminar on ‘Cyber Crimes a New
Threat to Corporate Environment’ last week.

Migrant workers to reap more benefits
There are important positive policy changes in
Middle Eastern (ME) countries which would benefit Sri Lanka's
migrant workers, said an expert of the migrant worker sector, L.K.
Ruhunuge. The new policies target protection, social security and
wage issues of migrant workers.
Northern peninsula industrial sector blooms
The industrial sector in the Northern peninsula
has bloomed. Expatriates from Jaffna are keen to invest in the
North. Infrastructure facilities in the North which were devastated
during the war against terrorism has been reconstructed.
SLR makes progress, cuts delays
Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) has increased revenue,
the number of passengers, trains, improved rail tracks and reduced
the delay time, according to a senior official of the Ministry of
Defence and Urban Development. However, he said there is room to
improve the standard of comfort and increasing the per passenger
kilometre revenue which is low at present.
SMEs present most proposals
The Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sector has
submitted a large number of proposals for the 2015 Budget aimed at
trade facilitation and providing incentives for development. An
increase in the number of proposals submitted by women entrepreneurs
has been reported.
Ocean Sciences Centre to be set up
The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the setting up
of a Centre of Excellence on Ocean Sciences and Environment. The
proposal by the Minister of External Affairs Prof. G. L. Peiris, to
set up the Indian Ocean Rim Association's (IORA) Centre of
Excellence on Ocean Sciences and Environment in Sri Lanka in
consultation and collaboration with local stakeholders,
