NO PLACE FOR A FUNERAL: The displaced people of Kajeemawatta, in Thotalanga, Colombo, now fighting their eviction by the UDA from shanty homes earlier this month, have no place even for funerals. Here, a Bhikkhu conducts the pansakoola rites for the family of an elderly lady who died, residents claim, due to the shock of the sudden mass eviction of the entire tenement. With no shelter and no privacy, the mourners have gathered in the alleyway with the coffin tucked away safe from the rain in the bit of roofed shelter that is all that remains of the homes now partially destroyed by the UDA’s bulldozers. The evicted community caused a stir on February 16 when they blocked the Japan-Sri Lanka Friendship Bridge across the Kelani River in protest over their sudden eviction. They continue to occupy their now half-demolished homes insisting that the UDA provides viable alternative houses. The UDA had given them time till February 29 to move out of the place with their belongings. (Photo: Rukmal Gamage)
