COURAGE: He may have lost his right leg in the thick of fighting, defending the Kilinochchi Army base, but Captain Athula Yatagama still bravely puts his best foot forward in yet another moment of glory - his wedding day. This disabled war veteran here proudly brings his bride Maheshini through the arch of swords of the ceremonial honour guard by his fellow officers at their wedding last week hosted gratis by the Mt. Lavinia Hotel. Many senior officers were present to celebrate this brave new venture by one who has given much to his nation, a shining example of endeavour despite the rigours of physical disability. (RK)

Half billion US dollars : Foreign investment to double this year

Foreign Direct Investment in Sri Lanka this year is expected to top half a billion US dollars, or about Rs. 48 billion, Government economic experts say. This big leap in investment, double the US $ 240 million in FDI that came in via the Board of Investment in 2002, is seen as reflecting heightened global investor confidence in local stability.

Japan's top envoy to meet LTTE chief

Japan's reputed international negotiator Yaushi Akashi is due to visit Sri Lanka at the end of this month and will meet LTTE supremo V. Parabhakaran, diplomatic sources said.

UN Secy-General's visit : LTTE keen to meet Annan

The LTTE has expressed a desire to meet United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan when he visits Sri Lanka next month, diplomatic sources said. However, Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando told the Sunday Observer that "a lot of people have shown an interest in meeting Mr. Annan but, everything depends on his itinerary which will be a tight schedule".
