Much potential for investment in Africa
Strengthening diplomatic and economic relations
with countries in the African continent is a timely and important
decision from an economic and business point of view, analysts said.
Commenting on the official visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to
Uganda, they said that today the political and economic landscape of
the African continent is changing and powerful nations are looking
at emerging businesses and economic opportunities in Africa.

Medawachchiya-Madhu Road rail service begins
The train services from Medawachchiya to the
Madhu Road station on the northern railway track was inaugurated by
Minister for Economic Development, Basil Rajapaksa and Minister of
Transport, Kumara Welgama, last week.The segment which covers 43
kilometres of the 252-kilometre project was completed on schedule by
Ircon International, a government of India undertaking, at a cost of
$ 81.3 m.

Indo-Lanka FTA should promote a win-win situation - Dr. Kelegama
Sri Lanka's exports to India have increased
under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and it is the third largest
destination after EU and US for Sri Lankan exports, said Institute
of Policy Studies (IPS), Executive Director Dr. Saman Kelegama at
the launch of ‘Handbook on the India-Sri Lanka FTA' in Colombo last
week. The book is a publication of the IPS.

Rising income disparity hits global economic growth - IMF chief
WASHINGTON: International Monetary Fund chief
Christine Lagarde has decried rising income disparity, noting its
harmful effect on global economic growth. Lagarde, in a speech on
poverty reduction in Washington, said the top 0.5 percent of the
global population holds over 35 percent of the wealth.
